Description
NPCs (Non-player Characters) are in-game characters that players can interact with in various ways and have unique identities, unlike most monsters. NPCs are responsible for training beginners, teaching skills, maintaining shops, and providing quests and other necessities. A player's main way of interacting with NPCs is through a 'Travel Diary'. NPCs can belong to various clans/tribes (e.g., Human NPCs can belong to the Tuatha de Danann clan in Uladh or the tribe of native Humans in the Courcle region of Iria), races (e.g., Humans, Giants, Elves, Fomors, etc.) or even species (e,g., Ruwai is an otter). Note that, player characters are all called Milletians by those born on Erinn, whether the player's character is Human, Giant or Elf. There are also a few Milletian NPCs.
Travel Diary
A Travel Diary is a notebook located on the right side of the conversation panel. At the beginning, players are given five basic options (keywords) to talk to an NPC: "Private Story", "Nearby Rumors", "Skills", "Part-Time Jobs", and "Classes and Training". Depending on the course of the conversation one chooses to take, NPCs will sometimes offer keywords that can in turn be used to spark other dialogues of interest. Keywords are often about various skills and places in Erinn. You can use the tabs at the right side of the book (Basic, Inter, Adv and Memo) to skip through the four main sections.
Intimacy
Through long-term interaction, NPCs can develop fondness for players. The level of intimacy will go up depending on how the player interacts with an NPC during gameplay. This can be achieved by offering gifts, doing part-time jobs, or completing certain quests. Conversely, NPCs’ intimacy will fall over time through a hiatus of communication, and players are soon forgotten. In order to prevent this, it is important to pay regular visits to the NPCs. Also, giving an NPC a gift that they dislike will lower their intimacy with a player.
If a player's intimacy with an NPC is high enough, they will start warning the player of Field Boss spawns nearby, may give access to a secret shop (see below) and/or may provide side quests (including role-playing quests, see below). Note that, not every NPC has a secret shop or provides side quests. Also, different NPCs on the same map may provide warnings about spawns for different Field Bosses.
Intimacy Chart
For more information about how best to raise intimacy, go to the "How to impress an NPC" section on the "Secret Shops" page.
Some NPCs have a secret shop in which they sell special items to their friends. Intimacy directly affects whether a player can see these special items up for sale. A number of skill books are sold exclusively from secret shops and usually only a few of these hard to get books are available in any one NPC's secret shop.
Some of the NPCs have retained memorable moments in their lives in the form of commonplace objects, like a locket or a dagger. These RP (role-play) items are activated once dropped on the altar of specific dungeons, allowing a player to relive the past in the NPC's viewpoint. Some accounts of NPCs' memories will differ from the viewpoint of others.
By developing greater intimacy with NPCs or meeting specific requirements, players can obtain these RP items.
General NPCs (by Town/Area)
These are generally accessible NPCs a player can meet without having to do the mainstream story or associated side quests.
This page does not list NPCs that only appear during events, see Category:Event NPCs instead.
Some mainstream NPCs can be met by a player who has not done the appropriate mainstream story. This is usually done with the assistance of another player who has already gained access to these NPCs or joining the party of a player doing a mainstream quest. However, this does not make them generally accessible NPCs, they are still considered mainstream NPCs as someone had to do the appropriate mainstream story to initially gain access and these NPCs main function is to be part of that mainstream story.

Mainstream Only NPCs (by Generation)
These are the mainstream NPCs that are only met during the mainstream story. If an NPC makes an appearance in multiple Generation stories then that NPC is listed only in the earliest one they make an appearance. That is, for each Generation, the only NPCs listed are those appearing for the first time in the game and that appear only in the mainstream story.
