Heavy Stander is one of the three types of Passive Defenses. It is essentially a skill that gives a monster the ability to ignore pain (and thus stun) from melee attacks to a certain extent.

- Heavy Stander is a passive ability innate to select monsters.
- Heavy Stander can randomly activate when the monster is being attacked by any melee attack.
- This includes attacking a monster when they have a skill loaded
- Example: Using a normal attack to stop a monster's Smash can still trigger their heavy stander.
- When active, the monster will flash red, and the player will hear a metallic noise. A message will also flash across the player's screen.
- Upon activation, Heavy Stander allows the monster to counterattack immediately, even in the midst of the player's attack cycle.
- Activation will interrupt the player's attack cycle if the player is using a normal attack. However, it is possible to continue attacking normally if the monster does not choose to retaliate.
- Activation on hits that normaly leave the target downed for extended periods (such as windmill with a slow weapon) will cancel the extended down period and allow the monster to stand normaly.
- There are three levels of Heavy Stander, each with their own unique effects.

- This is not enough to stop the target...
- Can’t shake the target’s balance!
- That may have inflicted some damage, but the target still has its guard up.
